January 2009

Happy New Year to all our readers!

Last year was our busiest year yet. Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham I: The Temple and Chapels by S. Snape and P. Wilson was published on 31 December 2007.

On 31 December 2008 we published Current Research in Egyptology IX, edited by Vicky Gashe and Jacky Finch.

We are proud to announce that, since out launch in July 2004, we have been able to make a significant contribution to Egyptological research. Our donations to date include:

£1,500 towards the cost of fieldwork at Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham (financed by sales of Tales from Ancient Egypt).
£1,000 donated to the Egypt Exploration Society to support fieldwork by Joanne Rowland (financed by sales of A Shattered Visage Lies).
£1,000 donated to The Manchester Museum, to finance consultation events relating to the development of the new Egyptology and archaeology galleries (financed by sales of The Two Brothers).

In June 2008 we reviewed our policy on donations and decided to make an important change. Rather than supporting a variety of different causes by making one-off donations linked to each published book for adults, we will be supporting one specific cause: the ongoing excavations at Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham. Donations will be made to the excavation fund on a regular basis, depending on our profits. We will, of course, keep you updated about all donations made.

December 2007

The Two Brothers: Life and Death in Middle Kingdom Egypt, by Professor Rosalie David, was launched in Manchester Museum on 8th November:

At the launch, Rutherford Press Limited was happy to present a cheque for £1,000 to the Manchester Museum; the money will be used for consultation on the development of a new archaeology and Egyptology gallery.

As a Christmas gift to our readers we are providing downloadable PDFs of two of the articles to be included in our soon-to-be published volume, Ramesside Studies. Please return to the main menu, click on “Our Books”, and then look at our new section “Forthcoming Publications”.

Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year to all!

October 2007

We have been busy preparing our latest book – The Two Brothers, by Professor Rosalie David, for publication. We are happy to announce that the book (with illustrations in full colour) is now printed and, although not officially published until 8 November 2007, is actually available from our website today.

The first £1000 of profit from sales of this book will be donated to Manchester Museum, where the mummies and funerary goods of the Two Brothers are currently displayed.

April 2007

We are delighted to report that our best-selling children’s book, Stories from Ancient Egypt by Joyce Tyldesley and Julian Heath, has been translated into Japanese by Egyptologist Akiko Sugi. Take a look on the Japanese Amazon website – the Japanese version of the book looks wonderful.

A Shattered Visage Lies by Donald P. Ryan is now available for purchase, and is selling well both in the UK and the USA.  The book appeals to a wide readership, and is becoming a particular favourite of those looking for a gentle introduction to the ancient world of the pharaohs. The first £1,000 of profit raised from sales of this book will be donated to the Egypt Exploration Society to fund fieldwork in the Delta.

February 2007

Welcome to the re-launched Rutherford Press Limited website. In this section of the site we intend to keep you up to date with RPL news and forthcoming events. As this is the first ever RPL newsletter, we have taken the opportunity to answer some of our most frequently asked questions.

What is Rutherford Press Limited?
RPL is a small, independent, specialist publisher founded in 2004 by Egyptologists Steven Snape and Joyce Tyldesley with two main aims:

Firstly, we wanted to publish accurate but accessible books on Egyptology; the sort of books that may not tempt the larger publishers, but which, we believe, deserve to be enjoyed by a wide readership.
Secondly, at a time when funding for archaeological projects is difficult, we wanted to make a financial contribution to Egyptological research. We therefore decided that the first £1,000 of profit from each of our books published for adults would be dedicated to an archaeological cause of the author’s choosing.

So far we are proud to state that £1,000 from sales of Tales from Ancient Egypt has been used to support fieldwork at Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham. The first £1,000 of profit from sales of Don Ryan’s book A Shattered Visage Lies will be donated to the Egypt Exploration Society to be used by their Delta Survey Project. So, by buying from RPL, you are supporting Egyptological research!

How can I buy your books?
RPL is currently too small to offer books through the major bookselling chains, which invariably operate an inflexible sales or return policy and expect to receive a punitive discount. Instead, books can be bought via our website (simply print off an order form and send it to us with a cheque – postage is free), via specialist Egyptological bookshops, or via Amazon where the book is offered both as an Amazon direct purchase and via Amazon market place. Unfortunately we are too small to accept credit card payments – readers wishing to pay by credit card should buy via Amazon.

When will your next book be published?
A Shattered Visage Lies… a unique poetry anthology edited by Professor Donald  P. Ryan, will be published on 28th February 2007 at a price of £12. This fascinating book should tempt anyone with an interest in the history of Egyptology. This book is available for order now, via the usual channels.

What are your plans for the future?
We are delighted to announce that in November 2007 we will be publishing The Two Brothers by Professor Rosalie David.

Watch this space for order forms as the books become available!

How Can I Contact You?
